So I'm as anti-Tom Cruise as the next guy, but man does this movie look pretty damn good.

It's like you took Ground Hogs Day meets Call of Duty.

Beat Up By an Angel

Beat Up By an Angel

So SyFy (god, I hate spelling it like that) is cranking out a new series where it's us against... angels? I mean, sure, I've seen Evenagalion. So let's see how bad this could get...

You know, it sort of looks interesting. I may hate myself for saying that and watching this, but hey, why not. Let's give it a shot.

A Very Doctor Who Wedding

A Very Doctor Who Wedding

I have a long list of places people shouldn't propose. At stadiums or pretty much any place that creates a situation where it embarrasses the girl to say no to the proposal. So I guess I'm not sure what to think about this one.

But hey, good for them, I guess. Until the divorce and the battle over who gets which sonic screwdriver goes to litigation.

Craig Fergusion - Oh How I'll Miss You

I'll just say it. I love the Late Late Show and with Craig stepping off the show at the end of the year, I'll be a lot sadder about late night programing. The man bucked the system of the standard talk show format and made an interview that was so damn entertaining.

Look how he made Russell Brand into someone who.. well, yeah. This interview was amazing.

Breaking Bad - A Thing of Beauty

Breaking Bad - A Thing of Beauty

I make no lie about the fact that I thought the world of Breaking Bad. It was, to me, something utterly amazing on television and it does hit a lot of notes for me. It's the last thing me and my father sort of bonded over before he passed. Which was odd because me and my father were vastly different people.

Still, here's this little 7 or so minute montage that just hits me hard as it's a thing of beauty.

A Summer Music Break

Here's a little music break

I'll be blatant, the gals in this next video can sing as well as they sure are lookers.

Or maybe I'm just keen on strapless attire and halter tops. Oooh yeah.

Speaking of sex appeal, I'll admit it, this song has an addicting tune to it, not to mention some more eye candy.

High School Lipsync Musical

High School Lipsync Musical

Now I think the repercussions of shows like Glee are starting to show in our school systems. Look at this little music video that Avon High School pulled off.

six whole minutes of a no edit one shot lip syncing musical video covering the majority of songs that came out and were popular throughout their schooling.

Sure, some segments of it seemed like the singer was a little off, but as a whole, that was very enjoyable and I give them a golf clap for the work they put into making it.

Bravo.

Mike Rowe is a Smart Smart Man

Mike Rowe is a Smart Smart Man

By now a lot of you students are either about to graduate or have already walked down that carpet, shook hands with the dean and taken your piece of paper stating you completed your education. Now what? A job is probably needed asap to start paying off those god awful student loans you acquired.

I found this little piece by Mike Rowe from Discovery channel's old Dirty Jobs show. He's a smart man and has some important things to say about life in general. Mike also lays it down. So when someone wrote to him and asked him for some career advice, this is what went down.

Hey Mike!
I’ve spent this last year trying to figure out the right career for myself and I still can’t figure out what to do. I have always been a hands on kind of guy and a go-getter. I could never be an office worker. I need change, excitement, and adventure in my life, but where the pay is steady. I grew up in construction and my first job was a restoration project. I love everything outdoors. I play music for extra money. I like trying pretty much everything, but get bored very easily. I want a career that will always keep me happy, but can allow me to have a family and get some time to travel. I figure if anyone knows jobs its you so I was wondering your thoughts on this if you ever get the time! Thank you!
- Parker Hall

Hi Parker
My first thought is that you should learn to weld and move to North Dakota. The opportunities are enormous, and as a “hands-on go-getter,” you’re qualified for the work. But after reading your post a second time, it occurs to me that your qualifications are not the reason you can’t find the career you want.

I had drinks last night with a woman I know. Let’s call her Claire. Claire just turned 42. She’s cute, smart, and successful. She’s frustrated though, because she can’t find a man. I listened all evening about how difficult her search has been. About how all the “good ones” were taken. About how her other friends had found their soul-mates, and how it wasn’t fair that she had not.

“Look at me,” she said. “I take care of myself. I’ve put myself out there. Why is this so hard?”
“How about that guy at the end of the bar,” I said. “He keeps looking at you.”
“Not my type.”
“Really? How do you know?”
“I just know.”
“Have you tried a dating site?” I asked.”
“Are you kidding? I would never date someone I met online!”
“Alright. How about a change of scene? Your company has offices all over – maybe try living in another city?”
“What? Leave San Francisco? Never!”
“How about the other side of town? You know, mix it up a little. Visit different places. New museums, new bars, new theaters…?”
She looked at me like I had two heads. “Why the hell would I do that?”

Here’s the thing, Parker. Claire doesn’t really want a man. She wants the “right” man. She wants a soul-mate. Specifically, a soul-mate from her zip code. She assembled this guy in her mind years ago, and now, dammit, she’s tired of waiting!!

I didn’t tell her this, because Claire has the capacity for sudden violence. But it’s true. She complains about being alone, even though her rules have more or less guaranteed she’ll stay that way. She has built a wall between herself and her goal. A wall made of conditions and expectations. Is it possible that you’ve built a similar wall?

Consider your own words. You don’t want a career – you want the “right” career. You need “excitement” and “adventure,” but not at the expense of stability. You want lots of “change” and the “freedom to travel,” but you need the certainty of “steady pay.” You talk about being “easily bored” as though boredom is out of your control. It isn’t. Boredom is a choice. Like tardiness. Or interrupting. It’s one thing to “love the outdoors,” but you take it a step further. You vow to “never” take an office job. You talk about the needs of your family, even though that family doesn’t exist. And finally, you say the career you describe must “always” make you “happy.”
These are my thoughts. You may choose to ignore them and I wouldn’t blame you – especially after being compared to a 42 year old woman who can’t find love. But since you asked…
Stop looking for the “right” career, and start looking for a job. Any job. Forget about what you like. Focus on what’s available. Get yourself hired. Show up early. Stay late. Volunteer for the scut work. Become indispensable. You can always quit later, and be no worse off than you are today. But don’t waste another year looking for a career that doesn’t exist. And most of all, stop worrying about your happiness. Happiness does not come from a job. It comes from knowing what you truly value, and behaving in a way that’s consistent with those beliefs.

Many people today resent the suggestion that they’re in charge of the way the feel. But trust me, Parker. Those people are mistaken. That was a big lesson from Dirty Jobs, and I learned it several hundred times before it stuck. What you do, who you’re with, and how you feel about the world around you, is completely up to you.
Good luck -
Mike

PS. I’m serious about welding and North Dakota. Those guys are writing their own ticket.

PPS Think I should forward this to Claire?

Gotham - A Show About Gotham Before Batman

Gotham - A Show About Gotham Before Batman

Which begs the question, how interesting or at least hopeful can it get? Batman is what made the city not just a sinking down the drain cesspool of violence and crime. But hey, I guess we'll see young Bruce and a lot of the other Gotham staples as kids. Which isn't all that exciting. No matter if this trailer is cut to make us believe it is.

But hey, I was surprised by Arrow before it aired, so I'll give it a chance. But frankly, I'm getting pretty bored with Batman.

BBQ Season Is Here - Objectifcation Time!

BBQ Season Is Here - Objectifcation Time!

In Los Angeles, all year round is BBQ season. So this isn't really for me or the other SoCal folks. But for the rest of the country, this is the time when you get the grill out and start doing that American version of BBQ, which is just generally cooking meat over an open outdoor oven. But that's a topic for another day.

For now, let's just enjoy some objectification and BBQ goodness.

Disney Infinity Gets a Marvel Boost

Disney Infinity Gets a Marvel Boost

While I have never actually played more than five minutes of the game, and I really do see how it can get boring after the novelty has worn thin, the fact that Disney is incorporating Marvel characters.

Was that a raccoon with a gun on top of a tree? Why yes, Rocket is in this mofo! Oh man, that makes me so happy. Especially seeing Spider-man all up in there. Guess the whole Fox/Sony/Disney rights that prevent them from showing up on screen isn't an issue here. Which is pretty damn sweet.

Just you wait till Disney Princesses start busting out the Lightsabers.

Cinco De CTU

Forget throwing back tequila tonight, what you have a date with is some Jack Bauer power hour..er... two hours.

On a show that I had some really close connection to, it's exciting to see it come back. Even if it's just for an mini series. In fact, that's probably better since with the 24 hour season, it really had to be filled with a lot of filler.

Love At First Humiliation

Love At First Humiliation

So an older brother lost a bet to his younger brother and had to dance in public for 30 minutes to whatever music the younger brother chose.

I don't think it's all that common to find true love in an act of humiliation, but here's hoping these dancing fools hit it off. Cause if that's not a touching story to tell. For all you lonely losers out there, maybe publicly disgracing yourself and dancing at a street corner is the way to go in finding love.
